2023/05/05 Process of finding a site for my workshop

To find a suitable space for my studio. Over the past two weeks, I have organised a site visit myself. I visited the South Bank, Liverpool Street, Hyde Park & Kensington Gardens, several local community parks, and coffee shops during this time. I would like you to consider my intervention an art therapy workshop. The place has to be cheerful and quiet, with good ventilation and gentle light. At the same time, spring in the UK is a limited and valuable resource all year round. I, therefore, plan to arrange the workshop in the form of a picnic for the audience. The final location will be Hyde Park.

Southbank – National Theatre’s Terrace
Southbank – Southbank Center’s Terrace
Comments: Very good infrastructure, with outdoor seating, but in a commercial area, too many tourists and noise.
Southbank – Southbank Center’s Platform nearby bar area
Comments: Very good infrastructure, interesting interior design and with seating, but adjacent to the bar, noisy, obscure lighting, lack of privacy.
Liverpool Street- A landscape project behind the train station,
Comments: Relatively new landscaping with designer furniture and a beautiful setting. But close to the railway station and office buildings, with many passers-by, and subject to the weather.
Hyde Park- Princess Diana Memorial Fountain
Comments: My favourite public landscaping project, with abundant greenery, fresh air and open grounds, but a royal memorial, probably influenced by the coronation, with relatively strict regulations, patrolled by security guards and subject to weather factors.
Kensington Gardens
Comments: There is an abundance of greenery and fresh air, and the site is open, but it is a royal park with relatively strict rules and regulations that may be influenced by the coronation and subject to weather factors.
Serpentine North Gallery-Caffe, the extension project by Zaha Hadid Architect.

Comment: Well-designed interior with food, drinks and toilets, elegant light and background music. However, it is a commercial venue with visitors, and conducting workshops may result in eviction.

Besides, consider the uncertainty of weather. I made plan B, arrange the workshop in my friend’s home. It’s a townhouse with a bright, cosy living room full of plants and artwork. My friend is also my colleague at the Sheffield School of Architecture. She remodelled the house’s original structure, expanding the entire living room while retaining the style of the old house. It’s also an ideal space.

Friend’s home
Comment: Well-designed interior with food and drink and bathrooms, elegant light and privacy, but this is a private residence, and prior consent of the occupants is required.
